THE PINCH

Fowler Arts presents The Pinch, in which three local artists share their attempts to articulate something about the value of art in a time of economic hardship. Featuring recent bodies of work by Kurt Freyer, Elizabeth Hoy, and Emilie Selden, the exhibition is housed in the Greenpoint Terminal Market building on the bank of the East River. These artists explore the way material transformation in an “art world” setting can alter the value of very modest objects. Working playfully with limited means these artists take trash, recycling, and unwanted objects and turn the dispensable into an art commodity.

Expansive and challenging, the artwork presented in this exhibition deals with a diverse range of subject matter, realized in various media. Experiments in activism, examinations of subjective realities, America’s rusting industrial and recreational Edens, deadpan re-creations of childhood, chest-beating, pleasure and enlightenment all combine to form a unique body of work from an outstanding group of young artists.
